The Beginner's Guide to Becoming a Game Master

So, you want to be a game master? Or you might be asking yourself what is a game master? A game master is a person basically in charge of facilitating a role playing game or RPG. You may also have heard the term dungeon master. The game master weaves the stories for other players and guides them through an adventure. You are the director, the architect, the producer - all rolled into one. While this can sound overwhelming to juggle so many hats, with preparation, it can be a very fun experience.

Role playing games have been a staple in my life since I met my husband who was an RPG player. He loves to game and has been playing role playing games since the 1980s. He will be weighing in with his observations and advice, too. I played my first RPG in college and wasn’t immediately hooked. I did enjoy spending time with friends and having some good laughs. I have played in more games since then and do enjoy it. My husband is usually part of a regular game while I am more of a casual player.

He brings his experience as both a player and a game master while I bring my experience as a new player. He will give his best tips while I will share my experience with GMs from the standpoint of a new player. We hope these articles will be informative and fun.

Over the next few months, we will be publishing articles on how to get started as a game master. We’ll go over the basics to help you run your first game. The articles will be for those who are interested in becoming a game master or for those who are just curious about what all this title entails.
